Older materials, and each one wants a different touch.

New Castle has the most varied housing in our area, and that is exactly why the method matters more here than anywhere else we work.

In and around the historic district there is brick, stone and painted wood on buildings old enough that cleaning is a conservation job, not a blasting job. Mortar joints, soft old brick and original trim all come apart under pressure that vinyl would shrug off. We work those low and slow, and we will tell you on site what will come off and what has become part of the surface.

Along the Route 9 and Rogers Road corridor it is mostly fifties through seventies ranches and split levels with aluminum siding and painted trim. Aluminum chalks as it ages, which means a white powder comes off on your hand. A wash takes the chalk and the mildew with it and usually buys several more years before the house needs paint.

That chalk test is the conversation worth having. Sometimes a wash is all it needs. Sometimes the siding is past it and painting is the better money. Because we do both, there is no incentive to tell you one answer over the other.

What we see on houses in New Castle

  1. 1

    Chalking aluminum siding

If white comes off on your hand, the finish has oxidized. Washing takes it off and tells you whether paint is next.

  2. 2

Moss and growth on north facing brick

Old brick holds moisture and feeds growth in the joints. It needs low pressure and the right product, not force.

  3. 3

Painted trim at the end of its life

Soft spots and peeling on sills and fascia want repair before paint. We handle both rather than covering it.

  4. 4

    Historic surfaces

Soft brick, lime mortar and original woodwork are conservation work. The wrong pressure causes damage that does not come back.
